How to Play Slay the Spire 2
A quick overview of Slay the Spire 2 gameplay, turn structure, and key concepts for new players just starting their first STS2 runs.
Slay the Spire 2 Gameplay Basics
Slay the Spire 2 is a turn-based deck-building roguelike. Each run starts at the bottom of a procedurally generated Spire and you climb through hallway battles, elite encounters, and bosses. After each combat victory, you add one card to your STS2 deck from a choice of three. Your goal: reach the top of the Spire with a carefully constructed deck and defeat the final boss. Every Slay the Spire 2 run is different, with random card rewards, shop offerings, relics, and events creating unique strategic puzzles.
Turn Structure & Energy
Each turn in Slay the Spire 2 starts by drawing 5 cards from your STS2 deck. You spend Energy (shown as orb icons at the bottom of the screen) to play Attacks, Skills, and Powers. Unspent Energy is lost at the end of each turn. After playing your cards, all remaining hand cards move to your discard pile. When your STS2 draw pile runs out, your entire discard pile shuffles back to form a new draw pile. This cycling is the core of Slay the Spire 2 deck management — understanding your deck composition means knowing what will come back around.
Ascension System
After beating Slay the Spire 2 with any character, you unlock Ascension mode — 20 progressive difficulty levels. Each STS2 Ascension tier adds new challenges: more dangerous elites, reduced healing at campfires, harder starting conditions, tougher boss encounters, and stricter card rewards. Ascension 20 is the ultimate test of Slay the Spire 2 mastery, where every decision matters from the very first floor.
Key Mechanics in Slay the Spire 2
Master these core STS2 mechanics to improve your win rate across all 5 characters. Each Slay the Spire 2 mechanic opens different strategic possibilities.
Strength
Strength increases the damage of each Attack card by 1 per stack. The Ironclad specializes in building Strength through cards like Inflame, Limit Break, and Spot Weakness. Strength is the most direct scaling mechanic in Slay the Spire 2 and works particularly well with multi-hit STS2 attacks, where each hit benefits from the full bonus.
Poison
Poison is a debuff that deals damage equal to its stack count at the start of the affected enemy's turn, then decreases by half (rounded down). The Silent is the master of Poison in STS2. Poison bypasses block entirely, making it one of the most effective ways to deal with high-armor enemies in Slay the Spire 2. Stack multiple poison cards for exponential damage scaling.
Orbs & Focus
Orbs are passive abilities that automatically activate each turn. The Defect channels three orb types in STS2: Lightning orbs deal damage to a random enemy, Frost orbs generate block, and Plasma orbs provide bonus energy. Focus increases the effectiveness of all orbs in Slay the Spire 2, while orb slots determine how many you can have active. Evoking an orb triggers its passive effect and replaces it with a new one.
Exhaust
Exhaust removes a card from your STS2 deck for the rest of combat. The Ironclad uses exhaust strategically to thin their deck, remove weak cards, and activate powerful synergies. Cards with exhaust often have above-average effects to compensate for their single-use nature in Slay the Spire 2. Exhaust-based builds are among the strongest strategies in the game.
Minions & Stars
The Necrobinder summons minion armies that fight alongside them in STS2, overwhelming enemies through numbers and coordinated attacks. The Regent builds resource engines using Stars, generating energy and scaling effects that spiral out of control. These two new STS2 characters from Slay the Spire 2 introduce completely unique mechanics not seen in the original game.
